I bought my first Finnish Spitz in 1975. That dog, "Nettie", Ch.Jayenn's Naughty Net-No-Kwa, was foxy, mischievious, affectionate and loving -- the perfect introduction to the breed. As a team at dog shows, we won numerous prizes and were among the top Jr.Handling competitors in Manitoba dog shows during the 1970's. Nettie and I also enjoyed long walks in the snow and cuddling on the couch.

Here I am at 14, showing Nettie to her first big win! It was the first Finnish Spitz booster show, held in Winnipeg in August 1976. She won Best of Opposite to the Best of Breed and Best of Winners, Cullabine Tarik newly imported from England by Joan Grant.

So here's what I found out about Finnish Spitz:
They are mischievious and clever. So clever, in fact, you need to keep them occupied or confined, until they learn to be trustworthy in your home. They are entertaining. They will talk to you in a multitude of tones, croons and mutters. They are not aloof (even though the standard says they are!)...In many ways they are like cats. They LOVE to be cuddled, petted and stroked and they don't care who they get to do it. They will sound an alarm if strangers come to the yard but they are really saying: "Look! Look! Look! Someone's here! Let them in so they can cuddle me!" They are extraordinarily gentle with children and other pets, although they may need to be introduced first. They do need a certain amount of socializing as they are being raised and benefit greatly from early obedience training. They do like to wander and require a fenced area. I WILL NOT SELL TO PEOPLE WHO DO NOT HAVE A FENCED YARD! The coat resists dirt and sheds less than short-coated breeds. Most of all, they are naturally beautiful. You will not be able to walk down the street without being stopped. "Is that dog part fox?" everyone will ask. "No," you will say with pride "This is a Finnish Spitz, the National Dog of Finland!"
